Party Planner

Planning a party can be a fraught business but it doesn't need to be! Planning a child's birthday party can be as easy or as complicated as you're willing to make it. Just remember a few simple rules.

1. The main thing is to make the child whose birthday it is feel special. Second is to ensure that everyone has a good time. The children will remember whether they had fun, not whether everything worked really well or the house was really clean.

2. The first step in planning a birthday party is to sit down with your child and find out what type of birthday party he or she wants. Then determine if your budget, your creativity, and your energy can deliver that type of birthday party. If not, scale down.

3. Don't go it alone! If a parent asks if they can stay after dropping off their child say "yes!" They can help with games, help with tea, and take care of minor boo-boos. Just be sure to reward them for their service when you pass out the birthday cake.

4. Give them plenty to do! There is nothing worse than a group of children with nothing to do. You need to keep them occupied from the moment the first guest arrives at the birthday party until the last guest leaves. Start the birthday games. If the kids are getting a little too wild, it's time for a very short story. Another way to bring down the frenzy of pre-schoolers at a birthday party is to give them a simple craft project to do. Always plan a few more activities than you expect to need.
